In real world situations, information that needs to be analyzed is not always completely certain. It is necessary to overcome the uncertainties in this information, while at the same time avoiding the paralysis of analysis. We have developed a toolkit of techniques for visually conveying uncertainties in information to the user in manners ranging from subtle cues for noting small details to large attention gatherers for ensuring that large uncertainties are not overlooked.
Our techniques were originally developed for Human Factors researchers at the U.S. Air Force, and have been demonstrated over a wide range of information types including discrete tactical units, weather patterns, and communications networks.
